The strength of the challenge

The Knights' Tournament

The Palio di Valfabbrica is a knights' tournament of considerable difficulty. The knights must compete in three different trials: the "Corsa degli Anelli" (Race of the Rings), the "Corsa del Saracino" (Race of the Saracen) and the "Scontro Diretto" (Direct Clash).

Corsa degli Anelli (Race of the Rings)

The knight, armed with an iron lance, must thread three rings: particularly difficult is threading two consecutive rings, one of which is placed right after exiting a curve.

Corsa del Saracino (Race of the Saracen)

The challenge against the Moorish warrior is fought with a wooden lance: for the maximum score the knight must strike the outer edge of the target disc, risking missing it entirely.

Scontro Diretto (Direct Clash)

The final trial simulates the ancient challenge between two knights who, armed with lances, clash head-on. The Palio is won by whoever first strikes the target which, once hit dead-on, can no longer be struck.

The joust rewards each knight with scores based on lap times, allowing for different strategies. The first two trials are contested twice per rione; based on the combined scores one knight is eliminated and the other two advance to the Direct Clash.

The rhythm of the challenge

Public Square Performances

The Palio di Valfabbrica stands out among Italian medieval events: each rione stages a historical reenactment (rievocazione) that carries you back in time, not with a simple costumed parade, but with a narrative that unfolds into an immersive public-square performance.

The reenactments take place on the evenings of Friday, Saturday and Sunday of the first week (one per rione) along Via Mameli.
